Why it was recalled
Takata airbag inflator: As it gets older, a combination of heat and humidity can cause the airbag inflator propellant to degrade. If an affected vehicle is involved in a collision triggering the airbag, the metal inflator housing may explode/rupture under too much internal pressure. Toyota Corolla ZZE122: Some of these vehicles are fitted with an airbag system that could experience electrical shorting due to exposure to high inductive electrical noise in the electrical circuit, resulting in damage to the Airbag Sensor Assembly (ECU). This could cause airbag warning lights to illuminate and the front airbag(s) and/or seat belt pretensioner(s) to become deactivated, and/or cause those airbag(s) to deploy inadvertently. Hazard
Takata airbag inflator: In the event of an airbag inflator rupture, metal fragments could propel out through the airbag cushion towards the vehicle occupants causing serious injury or fatality. Toyota Corolla ZZE122: The combination of the faulty Takata airbag inflator and the ECU defect results in an increased risk of a crash, serious injury or death.
