Takata SDI driver airbags may have been installed in Mercedes-Benz 639 Vito vans model years 2003-2006, as a replacement part during a previous repair. Identifying features description Consumers who have a Mercedes-Benz 639 Vito van manufactured between 2003-2006 need to check if the VIN of their vehicle is listed on the attached VIN list.

Why it was recalled

Faulty Takata airbag inflators are subject to a compulsory recall . Airbag inflator: As the airbag gets older, a combination of high temperatures and humidity can cause the airbag inflator propellant to degrade.

Hazard

If an affected vehicle is involved in a collision triggering the airbag, or if the airbag mis-deploys, the metal inflator housing may explode/rupture under too much internal pressure. If the faulty airbag inflator ruptures, it can go off with too much explosive force causing sharp metal fragments to shoot out and kill or seriously injure people in the vehicle. There have been serious injuries and deaths caused by faulty Takata airbags.
